On May 27, 2026, the Walla Walla City Council approved awarding the construction contract for the Walla Walla Public Library Renovation and Expansion Project to Banlin Construction. Construction is set to begin in June 2026, with initial site preparation and demolition activities taking place as the library moves to its temporary location at 115 W. Main Street.
Project Overview
Since 1897, the Walla Walla Public Library has been more than a building. It is where community life takes shape, where children learn to read, neighbors connect, new residents find their footing, and lifelong learners find a place to belong.
Today, the Library welcomes more than 10,000 visitors each month, hosts approximately 40 free public events, and serves as a community hub, technology resource center, and safe space for residents of all ages and backgrounds. With more than 11,000 active cardholders, it serves over 120,000 people each year.
While the Library has expanded its programs and services to meet growing community needs, the building itself has not kept pace. Originally constructed in 1970, the facility is limited by outdated systems and design constraints that no longer reflect how modern libraries function or serve the public.
The Next Chapter capital campaign represents a major investment in the future of the Library, focused on creating a more accessible, welcoming, and functional space that will continue to serve the community for generations to come.
What is this project going to accomplish?
The project includes a comprehensive renovation of the existing library and a small expansion of approximately 700 square feet to extend both entrances and create a new Great Hall.
Key improvements include:
- Reorganizing interior spaces
- Adding new restrooms
- Consolidating staff and support areas
- Creating flexible, dedicated programming and meeting spaces that better support community use.
The project will address critical infrastructure needs by upgrading the library’s aging electrical, lighting, plumbing, and HVAC systems. These improvements will enhance reliability, improve comfort, and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Energy-efficient equipment, LEED-certified systems, sustainable building materials, and water-efficient fixtures will lower operating costs, reduce environmental impact, and support a greener future.
In addition, the renovation will bring the facility into compliance with current ADA standards, improving accessibility, enhancing safety, and improving sightlines throughout the building. Project Schedule:
- Design – Completed January 2026
- Bidding & Bid Award – Spring/Summer 2026
- Construction – Summer 2026 through Summer 2027
How will this project be funded?
The Walla Walla Public Library Renovation and Expansion Project is funded through a combination of community donations, grants, and City capital funding. The majority of project funding has come from generous support from local donors, businesses, foundations, and community organizations through The Next Chapter capital campaign.
